Why I became an interior designer
Hello and welcome! I am excited to write my first blog post for Interior Plans. With my blog, I plan to provide helpful information about all things bathrooms, kitchens, and floor plans! But first, I would like to share a bit more about myself, how I became, and what led me to become an interior designer.
I believe most of us love interior design in one way or another. We all want a home that welcomes us, reflects who we are, and works seamlessly with our lifestyle. Creating spaces that feel peaceful, functional, and uniquely you is at the heart of what I love to do, and it is something I have been passionate about since childhood.
My early years were full of movement. I travelled quite a bit across different parts of Australia and even attended school briefly in the UK. However, the place that left the most significant mark on me was my life in a small rural town called Linton, about 30 minutes outside of Ballarat, Victoria.
We had been living in suburban Melbourne, but my parents decided to make a tree change, bought 10 acres of land, embraced a self-sufficient lifestyle, and built a beautiful mud brick home. So, from the ages of 7 to 16, I was immersed in the building process. I helped make mud bricks, watched them being laid, and saw firsthand how walls, roofs, kitchens, and bathrooms come together from the ground up. We used wind and solar power, grew our vegetables, and learned to live off the land as much as possible. It was a unique and formative way to grow up, and it has given me a deep respect for tradespeople, resourcefulness, and sustainability.
My hands-on childhood shaped the way I see the world. I developed a can-do attitude and a natural curiosity about how things are made. I was constantly rearranging my bedroom, sketching new layouts, and dreaming of ways to improve spaces. Even then, design was more than just an interest; it was a way of life. Still today, I like to get my hands dirty and build or make what I can!
Like many people, I took a few detours along the way. I worked in childcare and real estate before finally getting the chance to pursue my dream. I studied a Diploma of Interior Design part-time while raising my first daughter, completing it just before my second daughter was born.
My design experience includes working for a soft furnishings company, where I designed everything from window treatments to reupholstering and custom bedding. I also worked for a high-end modular home-building company, where I adapted house plans and finalised fixtures and finishes, helping my clients bring their visions and home goals to life.
After my third daughter was born, I chose to specialise further and completed my Kitchen and Bathroom Design certification. I love designing kitchens or bathrooms as it feels like solving a puzzle and finding innovative solutions that are functional and beautiful. During all these years of working and studying, I have bought, renovated, and sold four homes with my husband and am currently renovating my fifth home.
I inevitably combined my experience and started my business, Interior Plans. I have chosen to specialise in floor plan reviews and kitchen and bathroom design. These are the design areas I am most passionate about and are some of the most essential and expensive areas you want to ensure work well.
Interior Plans is a business built on years of growth, learning, and passion. My goal is simple: to help you bring your interior plans to life. Whether you are feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure where to start, I am here to guide you through the process with clarity, creativity, and care.
